Hi my name is Maura Cruz Lanz,
I am running for Hillsborough County Commission District 3.
As a first generation Cuban American, born in Ybor City, I was raised in the Ponce de León projects. I have many fond memories of my early years with my family and surrounded by cousins and friends. My father was a server at Columbia Restaurant and my mother was a seamstress at Sun State Slacks factory. My mother and father worked hard and were able to save enough money to purchase a small house in West Tampa, where we lived for many years. I attended Tampa Bay Elementry School, and West Tampa Jr. High. In my teens I worked for Joe Diaz at Olympia Bakery after school and weekends. During high school, I attended Mohawk Beauty School, for which I received my cosmetology license at the age of 18. I worked for many years as a hairstylist. In 1978 my father opened his own business, "Carlos Hairstyling", at which time I started working with him. In 1979, I met my future husband at my fathers barbershop. We were married in 1981 and made our home in West Tampa. In 1992, we moved to Wellswood where we raised our children. We remain in Wellswood today. I have always had a great love for the Tampa Bay area. It has truly been my home for all of my life.
Given the opportunity, I will use my thirty-plus years in business as a minority business owner with Manuel Lanz Construction Corporation to be a voice for the people and small businesses of District 3. I will tackle affordable housing, and the growth and infrastructure issues in our community through smart growth planning.
Together, we will be “Building a Better Tomorrow."
